Wrapping an electric scooter: does the registration color still matter?
Many electric scooter owners hear that “with an electric bike you can wrap it any way you like”. That’s wrong if your bike has a plate and a cà vẹt. It’s closer to true if it’s an e-bike (legally a non-motorized vehicle) — not registered, with no paint color on any papers.
TXD doesn’t sell the promise that “electric means no registration issues”. This guide separates the two groups so you can pick the right design — it’s still not legal advice.
Two kinds of electric bikes — don’t lump them together
- Electric scooters / electric motorcycles (Feliz, Flazz, Amio, Icon e, …): motor vehicles, registered and plated. The paint color is written on the cà vẹt.
- E-bikes / pedal-assist bikes (pedal assist, a design speed of no more than 25 km/h under the 2024 Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety): non-motorized vehicles, no registration or plate. There’s no registration certificate to record a paint color.
From the outside the two can look alike. The right way to tell them apart: check the papers and the plate — not whether it has a battery.
Registered electric scooters — the same Decree 168
Decree 168/2024/ND-CP, Article 32(1)(a) applies to owners of motorcycles, mopeds and similar vehicles — it doesn’t separate petrol from electric. Changing the brand markings or paint color so it no longer matches the registration: individuals are fined 200,000–300,000₫; organizations 400,000–600,000₫; plus an order to restore the color on the papers (Article 32(19)(a)).
A wrap that completely changes the dominant color on a Feliz, Flazz or Amio follows the same logic as a petrol Vision — ask the registration office before you order, or re-register the color (the procedure is summarized in the registration guide and on the “Before you wrap & when you remove it” page).
The real creative room on a registered electric scooter
The room isn’t in “electric means the law doesn’t apply” — it’s in graphic wraps that stay close to the dominant color on the cà vẹt: a black base still reads as black, a white base still reads as white. That’s where TXD’s full-cover sets, cut from a 3D scan, are strongest — rotate them in 3D and pick a design that barely changes the color on your papers.
- Keep the dominant color + bold graphics → usually lower paperwork risk (going by common enforcement practice, not a rule spelled out in the law).
- White → red or black → olive green all over → plan the registration step, same as a petrol bike.
- Battery, trunk lid, light covers: electric bodies differ from the Vision/Air Blade — you need a set for the exact model, not a borrowed petrol-bike file.

Unregistered e-bikes — no color on any cà vẹt
If your bike really is an e-bike / pedal-assist bike (no plate, no motor-vehicle registration), the Article 32 fine for a “paint color not matching the registration certificate” has no color on a cà vẹt to compare against, because the bike doesn’t have one. That’s why people say this group has “more freedom” for a full-body design.
It’s still not a blanket permit: misclassification (the bike is actually a plated electric scooter you took for an e-bike), local rules or other regulations can still apply. TXD doesn’t confirm the legal status of individual bikes — if you’re unsure, include your papers or a photo of the plate when you message us on Zalo.
TXD designs for electric scooters
TXD cuts full-cover sets from 3D scans for the electric models in our catalog (VinFast, and Honda electric models once designs are ready). We don’t install. We don’t handle registration for you. Want to change the dominant color on a bike that has a cà vẹt? Read the registration guide first, then message us on Zalo with the model year and a photo of your papers (cover the plate number if you like).
This isn’t legal advice. Figures and rules come from the published text and public summaries of Decree 168 and the 2024 Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety. General checklist: the “Before you wrap & when you remove it” page.
Message us on Zalo with your model + design code. TXD confirms the fit — we don't install.
